Safeway’s Burd Honored by U.S. Labor Dept.

Steve Burd, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Safeway, has been presented with the 2008 SPIRIT award by the U.S. Labor Department, recognizing Safeway’s leadership in furthering employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Steve Burd, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Safeway here, has been presented with the 2008 SPIRIT award by the U.S. Labor Department, recognizing Safeway’s leadership in furthering employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Former Major League pitcher Jim Abbott was named a co-winner at a ceremony Wednesday in Washington. Safeway employs nearly 10,000 people with intellectual and physical disabilities, including hearing and sight impairments
