Safeway Sets Second Small-Format Opening

Safeway confirmed published reports yesterday that it plans to open its second experimental small-format location in mid- to late summer, this one in Northern California.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway confirmed published reports yesterday that it plans to open its second experimental small-format location in mid- to late summer, this one in Northern California.

The store, at 24,000 square feet, will be roughly twice the size of The Market, the 12,000-square-foot unit it opened in a remodeled Vons last May in Long Beach, in Southern California.

However, the second store — which will be called The Market, Safeway — will be brand new and will be located on the ground floor of a 22-story condominium now under construction in downtown San Jose. Chain officials declined to comment further.

Steve Burd, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in October the company had been surprised by what it's learned form the first store in terms of profit potential and a smaller SKU count.
