Santa Visits Food City, Promotes Healthy Eating

LOUISA, Ky. — Santa visited Food City on a recent weekend, had his picture taken with customers' kids, and handed out bananas and apples instead of the usual candy and cookies.

The event was orchestrated by Food City's produce manager Lequitte Perry and floral manager Debbie Burke, and cashier Vess Muncie played Santa. The women had previously constructed a "Christmas House" from pallets, boxes and contact paper where they displayed fruit baskets and poinsettias.

"We charged $5 to take children's photos with Santa and we used the proceeds to buy fruit baskets for the nearby senior center," Perry told SN this week. "We made enough to buy 50 fruit baskets, and everybody had a good time. It was such a success that we're thinking of doing some similar kind of event for Valentine's Day or Easter. We'd do photos with kids again."

This Food City unit, owned by K-VA-T, is very community-oriented, and often creates fund-raising events for charities, Perry said.
