Seattle Voters to Consider Disposable Bag Fee

Voters will decide in the city's Aug. 18 primary election whether to impose a 20-cent fee on disposable bags at supermarkets and drug stores.

SEATTLE — Voters here will decide in the city's Aug. 18 primary election whether to impose a 20-cent fee on disposable bags at supermarkets and drug stores.

The fee was approved by the City Council here; however, the plastics industry collected enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot, according to published reports here.

In the interim stores are selling reusable bags; posting signs that promote their use; and encouraging donations of reusable bags to low-income communities.
