Seattle Workers, Chains to Resume Talks

Grocery chains and their union workers here are scheduled to return to the bargaining table next week in hopes of reaching a new contract agreement, the union local said.

SEATTLE – Grocery chains and their union workers here are scheduled to return to the bargaining table next week in hopes of reaching a new contract agreement, the union local said.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 21, which represents 25,000 workers at Safeway, Fred Meyer, QFC and Albertsons stores, agreed to extend its current contract through June 1. That contract was to have expired in April.

Among other differences, workers are unhappy with management proposals that would affect sick leave, according to its web site.
