SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. Super Rx Pharmacies announced Monday it is the first supermarket chain in Southern California to offer free diabetes medications.

The medications — in varying strengths and up to 100 pills, including Metformin, Metformin ER, Glimepride, Glipizide, Glipizide XL, Glyburide and Glyburide Micro — are free with a valid prescription. All transferred and authorized refills are included as prescribed by a physician. No membership or other type of commitment is required.

“Stater Bros. has a longstanding history of giving back to the communities it serves, and we believe in doing the right thing for the right reason,” stated Jack H. Brown, Stater Bros. chairman and CEO, in a press release. “As the only supermarket chain in Southern California to provide these medications for free during these tough economic times is the right thing to do. We’re pleased to be able to provide our valued customers with access to high-quality, affordable pharmacy services.”

With Stater’s free diabetes offering, which is available in recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, the retailer joins other food and drug retailers such as Price Chopper Supermarkets, Publix Super Markets and Meijer that announced similar programs earlier this year.
