ARLINGTON, Va. — Superior Grocers of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and Price Chopper Supermarkets of Schenectady, N.Y., won the Food Marketing Institute Maximizing People Potential Awards (Maxx) at the FMI Human Resources/Training and Development Conference last week. Superior Grocers won in the small-company category (fewer than 4,000 employees) for its New Employee Career Development program, a six-week course promoting communication between workers and managers that Superior said has reduced turnover by 14%. Price Chopper won in the large-company category for a program called The Efforts of Associates Matter (TEAM), which teaches problem-solving and focuses on communication. Runners up were Minneapolis-based Supervalu's Distribution Management Training Program and Victoria, British Columbia-based Thrifty Foods' online training program.
