MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu here on Wednesday said it would transition 40 stores to "zero waste" operations during its current fiscal year ending Feb. 29, 2012. The retailer made the announcement as part of a corporate responsibility report also released Wednesday.
Supervalu said the zero-waste stores would be primarily in its Albertsons banner. Stores achieving the designation must divert at least 90% of all waste from landfills — an effort accomplished in part through increased employee engagement, recycling, composting and the company's Fresh Rescue food bank donation program, Supervalu said.
The company completed its first two such store transitions in Santa Barbara, Calif., last year.
