UNFI Posts Q3 Gains With Help of Independent Sales

Sales at United Natural Foods Inc. increased by 10.8% to $985.7 million in the third quarter as sales to independent retailers and conventional supermarkets improved.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Sales at United Natural Foods Inc. increased by 10.8% to $985.7 million in the third quarter as sales to independent retailers and conventional supermarkets improved.

The wholesaler, based here, said Wednesday its sales to independent retailers were up 6.9% in the quarter that ended May 1, up from flat sales earlier in the year. Independents represent about 40% of UNFI’s business.

The sales increase prompted UNFI to increase its estimate of annual sales to $3.7 billion, from $3.6 billion. Net income in the quarter improved 15% to $19.5 million.

In a separate announcement Wednesday, UNFI said it has extended its supply agreement with Whole Foods Market through the year 2020. Their deal was to have expired in 2013.
