PROVIDENCE, R.I. — United Natural Foods here on Thursday said that its York, Pa. distribution center has been awarded LEED Gold status by U.S. Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high-performance green building.
The 675,000-square-foot York warehouse is the largest in UNFI's network and is focused on efficient water and energy use, UNFI said. It was recognized for having used more than 60% regionally sourced building supplies; the diversion of more than 95% of construction waste from local landfills; using materials with more than 35% recycled content; installing a cistern to store 20,000 gallons of rainwater to use for refrigeration and the use of water reduction technologies.
UNFI's Ridgefield, Wash. center was awarded LEED Gold certification last year. The company said it was pursuing LEED Silver status for its new headquarters building and Gold at a new distribution center in Texas currently under construction.
