Wal-Mart Denies Report on Manhattan Sites

Reports last week that Wal-Mart was eyeing some sites in Manhattan’s Union Square in New York City for a new location are inaccurate, a spokesman for the retailer here told SN.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Reports last week that Wal-Mart was eyeing some sites in Manhattan’s Union Square in New York City for a new location are inaccurate, a spokesman for the retailer here told SN.

“While we’re still interested in coming to the New York City area, the rumors that we were looking in Union Square are not true,” spokesman Phil Serghini said, adding that the reports seem to have been based on speculation in a local paper from a clerk at a Union Square Circuit City store that is scheduled to close shortly.

Serghini said Wal-Mart’s sales data suggests New Yorkers are leaving the city to shop at the retailer’s outlets in New Jersey and Long Island, illustrating the need to build there, but said there were no plans in place yet.
