Walmart Canada to Grow Supercenters

Walmart Canada said it would open 40 new supercenters during the fiscal year, including its first such stores in the provinces of Quebec and Manitoba.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Walmart Canada here on Wednesday said it would open 40 new supercenters during the fiscal year beginning Feb. 1, including its first such stores in the provinces of Quebec and Manitoba.

The projects — mainly consisting of expansions of existing discount stores and relocations — represent an investment of around $500 million, the company said.

The new stores are expected to bring the company's store count to 333 stores by the end of January 2012 — a net gain of eight stores. It is expected to operate 164 supercenters and 169 discount stores at the end of the fiscal year, as compared to 124 supercenters and 201 discount stores currently.
