ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here currently has products in its sources sourced from Japan, but they were all received before the earthquake and tsunami hit that country, Colleen Wegman, president, said Thursday on her company blog.

In addressing safety concerns stemming from the ongoing nuclear reactor crisis triggered by the earthquake, Wegman wrote, “We are now trying to determine the status of these products going forward, including any concerns about food safety.”

She noted that there are no products from Japan sold in Wegmans’ seafood, meat, produce or dairy departments. The stores do carry some products in grocery (teas and international brands) from Japan, and some of the ingredients in sushi are imported from Japan.

“We feel very badly for the people of Japan, including our suppliers,” wrote Wegman. “We hope we can continue to support their economy and continue to do business with them whenever that is possible. However, if food safety becomes a concern, we will not compromise the health and well-being of our customers and employees." (Emphasis and italics Wegman's.)
