Wegmans Adds $4 Generic Drug Program

Beginning March 1, Wegmans Food Markets joins the list of grocery chains offering a 30-day supply of generic drugs for $4, and a 90-day supply for $10, the company announced this week.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Beginning March 1, Wegmans Food Markets joins the list of grocery chains offering a 30-day supply of generic drugs for $4, and a 90-day supply for $10, the company announced this week.

The program includes nearly 390 generic maintenance drugs and those used to treat acute conditions. This follows free generic oral antibiotic prescriptions announced in January.

The company acknowledged the need to remain competitive with others that offer discount generic programs.

“When a patient feels they must shop around for lower prices, we risk sacrificing the data that shows all of the prescribed drugs for that person,” said John Carlo, Wegmans’ vice president of pharmacy, in a press statement.

Wegmans estimates the discount generic program will save $15 million in health care drug costs, and impact 3.6 million new and refilled prescriptions annually.
