Wegmans Reformulates Private Labels

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets is overhauling store brands to reduce sodium and sugar, increase whole grains, eliminate gluten and high fructose corn syrup and find alternatives to Chinese suppliers.

“It means opening every package of every product, analyzing, counting (blueberries in waffles e.g.), popular brand comparison (if there is one), examining customer comments, etc.,” wrote Senior Vice President of consumer affairs Mary Ellen Burris, in a Fresh Stories blog post.

A year into the process, 245 private labels have been improved, including 50 lower-sodium soups; cereals and wheat crackers with more whole grain and no HFCS; and potato chips that are now gluten-free.
