Wegmans Tests Larger Grocery Carts

Wegmans Food Markets is testing new, larger shopping carts at a store, the company said in a local news report last week.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets is testing new, larger shopping carts at a store here, the company said in a local news report last week.

The new carts have 1,000 more cubic inches of space, the report said, with a wide, flat lower compartment and a more traditional-sized compartment above it.

In the report, seen on Rochesterhomepage.net, some customers complained the carts were too unwieldy, while others said they appreciated having the extra space to keep fragile items separate from heavier groceries such as milk.

“Whenever you make a change like this, you know that it isn't going to work perfectly for every customer,” said Jo Natale, director of media relations for Wegmans, in the report. She said the company was trying the carts because two of its traditional cart suppliers had gone out of business. The supplier of the new carts was not identified.
