Taking Sides: GMO labeling law

Do you support the federal  ‘Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act’? The Grocery Manufacturers Association, with the Snack Food Association, International Dairy Foods Association and the National Association of Manufacturers, recently filed a lawsuit challenging Vermont’s mandatory GMO labeling law. Rather than a state-based approach to GMO labeling, the associations favor a federal bill that would preempt states from legislative efforts to require labeling of GM foods.

The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, introduced by Congressmen Mike Pompeo and G.K. Butterfield, is the right approach to establishing federal standards and clearing up the confusion surrounding labeling of genetically modified foods.

The bill would help prevent a patchwork approach to GMO labeling at the state and local level that would only be confusing for consumers
