ANAHEIM, Calif. — Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright addressed attendees at the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association's Dairy-Deli-Bake 2007 expo here Sunday, sharing her views on current world events and stressing her belief that there is a drastic need for diplomacy in many parts of the world. "Around the globe, there is a lack of leaders. Europe looks inward and some Asian countries turn to repression and other things that have failed." On the war in Iraq, Albright said our leaders at this point have no good options, but added that we should continue to encourage political settlement and prevail upon Iraq's neighbors to work together toward a plan that could benefit all the countries. "It worked in the Balkans," she said. "Strong diplomatic engagement by the United States is needed to convince people throughout the Middle East nothing will be solved by violence." She added that steps have been taken in that direction recently. "I have faith in our political system, and I describe myself as an optimist that worries a lot."
