CHICAGO — With dollar sales of $34.1 billion last year, McDonald’s ranked first in the consultant group Technomic’s 2012 Top 500 Chain Restaurant Report released earlier this month.
Technomic reported the chain increased its 2011 dollar sales by 5.5% and unit sales by 0.5% from 2010. Over the past year, the quick service restaurant has rolled out health and wellness inspired initiatives, such as its campaign to improve the nutrition of offerings and to revamp its children’s Happy Meal with fruit, smaller fries and low-fat milk options. This winter, the quick-service restaurant also began an advertising campaign highlighting farmers that supply McDonald's.
Subway, Starbucks, Wendy’s and Burger King followed McDonald’s as the top five restaurant chains on Technomic’s report.
