Southwest Retailers Get New Organic Milk Source

PHOENIX — Shamrock Farms here last week began delivering organic milk to a number of food retailers in its five-state service area, including Bashas’, Fry’s, Albertsons and Sunflower Markets. Half-gallons are the first items to hit dairy cases, with more organic dairy products, such as sour cream, to follow, according to company officials. Initial pricing will average $3.20 for the half-gallon size, though market forces may cause fluctuations in the future, they said. Part of the price differential with other organic milk, which currently costs about $4 per half-gallon, is due to the fact that many stores are closer to Shamrock’s processing facility, reducing transportation costs, officials said. To create the organic line, the company built a separate, organic dairy farm next to its main facility, and introduced some 200 calves to newly transitioned pastureland adjacent to the organic operation. As the largest regional supplier of milk, Shamrock now claims the title as Arizona’s first organic dairy.
