CFIA Shuts Down Beef Supplier as E. Coli Illnesses Identified

BROOKS, Alberta — Last week the Canadian Food Inspection Agency shut down a beef supplier here where E. coli had been found in early September as it identified four illnesses associated with contaminated meat.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service also expanded its recall of products distributed by XL Foods, the supplier, to include all beef and beef products produced on Aug. 24, 27, 28, 29 and Sept. 5. The recall notice lists 24 retailers that may have sold contaminated beef across much of the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Canadian and U.S. retailers that have issued a recall include Overwaitea Foods, Smith's Quality Meats, Canada Safeway, Safeway and Wal-Mart.

As of last week, over 890,000 pounds of beef shipped to the U.S. was recalled, according to Food Safety News.

CFIA first detected E. coli O157:H7 in raw beef trimmings during routine testing at XL Foods’ Alberta plant, which was corroborated by tests from FSIS. The two agencies began issuing health alerts to retailers and the public in mid-September.

CFIA has confirmed four E. coli illnesses in Alberta. As yet there are no instances of illness associated with XL Foods beef in the U.S.
