Target expands small format in Midtown Manhattan

One of several urban stores opening this week around the country

Target Stores is opening a small-footprint location in Manhattan on Friday, one of about 10 of the chain’s new, urban-format stores to open this week.

The 43,000-square-foot New York City store, in Herald Square just a block away from Macy’s flagship location, will have a small, grab-and-go grocery department on one level and a more extensive grocery offering on a lower level. It includes 16 self-service checkouts, and will offer same-day delivery.

“We expect we’re going to have a lot of tourists, and lots of New York City professionals — the on-the-go New York City person who wants to grab something quickly, so we have grab-and-go grocery assortment,” said Shannon Burho, district team leader for Target, in a video on the company’s website.

The location will also include a CVS pharmacy.

It is the Minneapolis-based retailer’s second small-format store in Manhattan, and its first in the Midtown area. It also recently opened a 20,400-square-foot store in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn and a 48,000-square-foot store in Port Washington, N.Y., not far from New York City on Long Island.

Other locations of Target’s small-format concept have opened this week in Chicago; Minneapolis; Los Angeles; Philadelphia; Oak Park, Ill.; Skokie, Ill.; and Orange, Calif.

Four additional small-format Targets are scheduled for November openings in Austin, Texas; Gainesville, Fla.; Raleigh, N.C.; and San Francisco.

The smaller urban stores, which the company is also using to target college towns, are highly productive, the company has said in recent earnings calls. It currently operates 38 of the smaller stores plans to add 130 more in the next two years, according to an Associated Press report.
