CINCINNATI — Kroger Co. on Tuesday announced another Kroger Marketplace project in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Construction of the store, to be located in Suffolk, Va., is to begin in July, Suffolk Mayor Linda T. Johnson said in a release.
Kroger is set to open its first Marketplace store in the Hampton Roads market, in Virginia Beach, in July.
“Since first entering the market 10 years ago, we’ve learned a lot from the community and what our customers look for in a grocer,” Jay Cummins, president of Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic Division, said in a statement. “Suffolk deserves a top-quality grocery experience and that includes local products, home goods, clean stores, low prices and, of course, exceptional customer service.”

Kroger Marketplace stores combine a full grocery offering with 30,000 square feet of non-grocery, ranging from furniture to home décor. Kroger last year said it would build such stores in markets where it was poised to grow share. Its food competitors in Hampton Roads include Supervalu’s Farm Fresh banner and Delhaize’s Food Lion. Kroger entered the market through the acquisition of Hannaford stores spun off when that chain was acquired by Delhaize.
