New Seasons partners with FishWise on seafood training

New Seasons Market, Portland, Ore., has tasked seafood sustainability organization FishWise with training staff on seafood and implementing its sustainability rating system.

The retailer’s seafood staff and all meat and seafood managers have already gone through FishWise’s training on the type, source, sustainability and quality of seafood sold at New Seasons. All meat and seafood staff, making up more than 200 employees, are planned to undergo training by April 30.

New Seasons will also adopt a traffic light labeling system of seafood sustainability based on the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program. The retailer will only sell fish labeled green or yellow.

“Our customers care about their food and where it comes from. The FishWise seafood labeling program allows us to provide our customers with all the information they need to make seafood buying decisions that line up with their values,” Daisy Berg, New Seasons Market seafood buyer and merchandiser, said in a press release. “FishWise’s expertise in ocean health and sustainable fisheries make them the perfect partner for this work.”
