Delhaize latest to make cage-free egg commitment

Another major retailer has announced a plan to source 100% cage-free eggs by 2025, with Delhaize America promising to achieve that goal in its Food Lion and Hannaford banners.

“Delhaize America supports continuous improvement in animal welfare practices through its comprehensive approach to sustainability,” J.J. Fleeman, chief strategy and development officer at Delhaize America, said in a press release. “Today's cage-free egg announcement is another step we are taking to ensure the humane treatment of animals while also reinforcing a number of strong sustainability practices we have implemented across our organization.”

Delhaize said it plans to first transition private label shell eggs, which account for the majority of category sales, and then work on the rest of its offerings.

“Both Food Lion and Hannaford have increased the availability of cage-free shell egg options in both its private label and national label egg offerings, and will continue to increase the number of cage-free shell options as quickly as possible based on available supply, customer demand and affordability,” said Fleeman.

The retailer said it would publicly report on the number of eggs impacted.

Yesterday, Albertsons made a similar commitment to cage-free eggs for all its stores, following pledges from Trader Joe’s, Ahold, Target and Supervalu.
