As Rick Dreiling approaches retirement as chairman and CEO in May 2015, Dollar General continues to expand at a breakneck pace.

Since Dreiling took the helm in 2008, the retailer has grown its annual sales 80% to $17.5 billion in 2013, and increased store count by 38%.

Dollar General opened its 11,000th store in October 2013. It plans to open 700 stores in 2014, compared with 650 last year. Upcoming openings in Maine, Oregon and Rhode Island — three new states for Dollar G
