LOS ANGELES -- Arden Group, parent company of Gelson's and Mayfair Markets here, reported increased earnings and decreased sales for the second quarter and 26 weeks ended July 1. Net income rose 34.7% for the 13-week quarter to $2.25 million and 65.8% for the half to $3.7 million. Sales -- including volume in the prior year from GPS Pool Supply, which was sold in May 1994 -- fell 2.1% for the quarter and 3.6% for the half. Same-store sales -- the equivalent of Arden's sales without the GPS volume -- rose 1.6% for the quarter and 0.1% for the half. The company said most of the same-store sales increase was attributable to the timing of the Passover/Easter holidays, which fell in this year's second quarter, compared with last year's first quarter. "However, sales have been negatively impacted by competitors opening new stores within Gelson's trading areas," the company indicated. The company said it plans to open a new Gelson's in Calabasas later this year; it also said it has secured an option to purchase a piece of real estate and has signed two long-term leases, with the intention of opening three additional Gelson's units. Arden operates eight Gelson's and four Mayfairs in southern California.
