ion in food, drug and mass outlets combined for the 52 weeks ended June 13. In supermarkets alone, the sales increase was 10.7%; the grocery channel accounted for $2.8 billion of total sales. However, the sales increases in grocery have slipped a bit since calendar year 2003, when the growth was 11.2%, as well as calendar year 2002, when the growth was 11.5%.

Convenience/PET still water was a favorite of supermarket shoppers over the past year. As a result, sales rose 18.7% to $1.8 billion for the 52 weeks ended June 13. Sparkling/mineral bottled water was also well received, with sales jumping 12.2% to $249.2 million. Jug/bulk still water sales were down by 5.6%; however, this remained the second-largest bottled water segment, accounting for $722.5 million of total supermarket sales.

Notably, sales of bottled water have been flowing upwards for the past several years in the drug store channel, which logged the most impressive growth rate, 23.5% to $264.3 million, for the 52 weeks ended June 13. In calendar year 2003, sales rose 14.5% in the drug channel. The increase was 18.3% in calendar year 2002.
