Two Executives Advance at Hy-Vee

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Hy-Vee Food Stores here said John Briggs has been promoted to vice president, secretary and controller. He was assistant vice president, secretary and controller.

Briggs began his career at Hy-Vee while he was in high school, working part time at a store in Fort Madison, Iowa.

After graduating from college, he joined the corporate staff as an internal auditor in 1982 and one year later assumed the title of internal audit manager. He became staff accountant in 1984 and assistant treasurer in 1986. In 1988, Briggs was named director of office administration. In 1992, he moved back to the accounting department as secretary, controller. Shortly after that, assistant vice president was added to his title.

Hy-Vee also said John Comer has been promoted from vice president of purchasing, to group vice president of purchasing. Comer has held many positions in his 40-plus-year career with Hy-Vee, including assistant director of purchasing, director of purchasing, assistant vice president of purchasing and vice president of purchasing.

Briggs reports to Mike Wheeler, senior vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer; Comer reports to Ron Pearson, chairman, president and chief executive officer. Employee-owned Hy-Vee operates 229 retail stores in seven Midwestern states.

Cox to Head Roundy's Divisions

PEWAUKEE, Wis. -- Roundy's here has named Fred Cox president of its Eldorado, Ill. and Evanston, Ind., divisions. Cox, who was vice president of merchandising for Roundy's Milwaukee division, rejoins the company after a stint at Syracuse, N.Y.-based Penn Traffic Co., where he worked in various capacities.

Cox replaces outgoing president Wayne Swart, who headed the two divisions of Roundy's and its predecessor, ScotLad Foods, for over 35 years. Swart had previously announced his retirement effective June 30, 1997. Until that time, Swart's title is president emeritus.

Both Cox and Swart report to Ralph Beketic, corporate vice president of wholesale.

Western Beef's Ludlow to Exit

RIDGEWOOD, N.Y. -- Western Beef here has announced the resignation of Robert C. Ludlow, the company's chief financial officer. The company said Ludlow left Western Beef to relocate to another state. Western Beef is actively pursuing a successor, according to a company official.
