United Grocers Tap Olsen as President

here said Terry Olsen, chief operating officer, has added the title of president of the 420-member retailer-owned cooperative.

He succeeds Charles E. Carlbom as president. Carlbom, 64, will retain the title of chief executive officer.

Olsen, 58, joined UG last September as chief operating officer after leaving United-AG Cooperative, Omaha, Neb., where he was president and chief executive officer. In another promotion last week, Mark Tweedie, 40, who joined UG in June as senior finance officer after serving as director of finance at Foodland Distributors, Livonia, Mich., was named chief financial officer. That position had been vacant for several months.

The company said Carlbom will devote most of his time to joint venture and merger opportunities with Associated Grocers, Seattle, and other retailer-owned cooperatives. He will be assisted on joint venture projects by Myron Fleck, chief financial consultant, and Keith Miller, vice president, strategy, the company said.

Pathmark Names Vitrano VP

CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores here said Frank Vitrano has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer.

He succeeds Ron Marshall, who resigned last spring to become chairman and chief executive officer of Nash Finch Co., Minneapolis.

Vitrano, 43, who has been with Pathmark since 1972, was formerly vice president and treasurer. He will report to Jim Donald, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Tarr Announced as URM President

SPOKANE, Washington -- URM Stores here has named Gregory L. Tarr as president and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 1999.

Tarr will replace Steve Herbison, who is retiring at the end of the year. Herbison has been with the cooperative wholesaler for 35 years and has served as the CEO since 1989.

Tarr was most recently the senior vice president of the Western Region of the McKesson Corporation, overseeing all sales and operations for 11 distribution centers, including Anchorage, Spokane, Denver and Los Angeles. Tarr is the current chairman of the Washington Wholesale Drug Association. He will join URM on Sept. 28 for a transition period.

URM, founded in 1921, supplies more than 560 stores, including 185 supermarkets and 16 superstores and 12 warehouses.

Emberson-Bain Appointed to Board

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Cost-U-Less here said Ashley Emberson-Bain has been named to the warehouse clubs's board of directors.

Bain is chief executive officer and managing director of Pacific Capital Partners, a venture capital firm based in Papua, New Guinea. Bain's clients include the Kula Fund -- a private equity fund established in 1997 for 12 Pacific Islands -- which has purchased 80,000 common shares of Cost-U-Less, in addition to 160,000 shares it acquired in the company's initial public offering in July. The combined total of 240,000 shares is equal to 6.8% of the total outstanding common stock, the company said.

The Kula Fund is an affiliate of Commonwealth Development Corp., a development finance institution of the United Kingdom that oversees economic development activities overseas, including significant interests in the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean.
