irector of strategic business development for Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich., has been named the new operating committee co-chair for the Joint Industry Project on Efficient Consumer Response here. He is replacing Andy Westlund, former vice president of distribution at Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine.

Swoboda, who will represent industry distributors in the effort, joins Mike Maurer, director of industry affairs at Procter & Gamble Co., Cincinnati. Maurer represents grocery industry suppliers in the initiative.

"We need to provide more real-world success stories and road maps to help companies move faster and with great certainty that there will be a payback for their commitment to ECR," Swoboda said in a statement. "The next few years will clearly demonstrate that ECR works."

Spartan Promotes Two Executives

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores here has promoted two supply chain executives. Pete Lima has been promoted to the newly created position of director of transportation. In his new post, Lima will manage the Grand Rapids and Plymouth Traffic and Transportation departments.

John Sutphin has been appointed the director of warehouse operations. He replaces Chuck Curtis, who has left the company. In his new position, Sutphin will manage operations for the general merchandise, perishables and grocery warehouses, as well as other distribution and support facilities.

Both executives will report to Mike Frank, vice president of logistics.
