As a former CEO, Magowan was ineligible to serve on committees at Safeway, which has remade its board in recent months. Safeway also named Douglas Mackenzie to its board last month, increasing its size to 10 members. With Magowan's departure, the board will return to nine members.

Separately, Safeway said Mike Mallon has resigned as vice president of real estate at the company's Dominick's Supermarkets division in Chicago. No successor has been named yet.

ALBERTSONS NAMES KORMELUK TO MERCHANDISING POST

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertsons here said last week Nick Kormeluk has been named group vice president, center store merchandising. He has spent the last two years as vice president, investor relations. Succeeding Kormeluk in that post will be David Parker, who is joining Albertsons after working at Micron Technology in the areas of senior investor relations and corporate communications.

PENN TRAFFIC CFO DIMOND RESIGNS; MARTIN PROMOTED

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Penn Traffic here said last week Robert B. Dimond has resigned as executive vice president and chief financial officer for personal reasons unrelated to the company. Assuming Dimond's responsibilities will be Randy P. Martin, the chain's chief accounting officer. Martin will hold the title of senior vice president, finance. The company did not say when a permanent CFO would be named. Penn Traffic has been operating under Chapter 11 since May 2003. (See Page 6.)

SPARTAN STORES' DIRECTOR JOSEFOWICZ TO RESIGN

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Gregory Josefowicz will leave his position on the board of directors at Spartan Stores here, effective at Spartan's annual meeting Aug. 10, the retailer-distributor said. Josefowicz, president and chief executive officer of the Borders Group, has served on the board since 2001. He was elected to a three-year term at least year's annual meeting. Josefowicz served on the company's executive committee, compensation committee, and nominating and corporate governance committee. "In attempting to balance my time commitments, the annual meeting seems the appropriate time to step aside," Josefowicz said in a statement.
