SALISBURY, N.C. - Food Lion kicked off its fourth annual "Hunger Has a Cure" campaign last week.

Customers can choose to either make monetary donations or purchase ready-made, discounted boxes of food to be given to local food banks affiliated with America's Second Harvest Network, a hunger relief organization.

The donations go directly on a customer's bill and are displayed on the receipt. Customers can purchase $1 icons, buy boxes of food for $4.99 or give any amount they want.

In 2005, Food Lion contributed over $510,000 to America's Second Harvest, including 67,000 boxes of food and $127,000 in cash donations. Donations from the past two years have topped $1.2 million. Last year, Food Lion was the nation's second-largest retail food donor to America's Second Harvest.

America's Second Harvest distributes more than 2 billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually. Last year, it provided food assistance to more than 25 million people.

"Traditionally, donations to food banks decline during the summer months," Food Lion spokesman Jeff Lowrance said. "The hunger problems do not."

In addition to the "Hunger Has a Cure" campaign, all Food Lion stores are encouraged to work with local food banks beyond the annual fund-raising effort. This year's summer campaign will run until July 8.
