Fleming Offers Extranet Use
g Cos. here said last week that it is offering its retailers on-line access via an extranet. The extranet provides product information as well as real-time access to special buying opportunities, and also enables communications between stores. Access to the extranet is free for retailers. "[The extranet] allows any Fleming-supplied retailer access, and vendors are involved and use it for marketing purposes," said Leslie Gamble, director of Fleming's retail services marketing. Vendors pay to be part of the system, although Fleming did not disclose the amount. Currently about 500 vendors and 2,000 retailers use the systems to access product information.
Whole Foods, Sainsbury Honored
BOSTON -- Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, and J. Sainsbury plc, London, were among the retailers recognized for their operational and strategic excellence with an award from CIO magazine here. The CIO 100 award is presented to organizations that "know their customers, leverage the Internet, invest in people, innovate like crazy and completely reinvent themselves, if necessary," according to the magazine. Other retailers honored with the CIO 100 award included Wal-Mart Stores, Sears Roebuck & Co., Home Depot, Staples and apparel retailer Patagonia. CIO magazine is published by International Data Group, an information-technology media, research and exposition company.
