Merchants T&F Buys Into Sloan's

ere, a financial services company, has purchased 187,500 shares of Sloan's Supermarkets common stock, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The shares represent 7.82% of Sloan's outstanding shares. Merchants T&F said it bought the stock for investment purposes. It paid from $3.25 to $9 for the shares.

E.S. Schwartz, vice president of Merchants, said company officials intend to meet with Sloan's management to discuss the purchase and Merchant's plans. No date was set for the meeting.

Sloan's, based here, operates 11 stores in the New York metropolitan area. The stores had been operating under the same name but were with different ownership until March 1992, when they were purchased by Designcraft Industries, a company controlled by John Catsimatidis, president of the retailer Red Apple Cos. Designcraft later changed its name to Sloan's Supermarkets.

Merchants T&F also owns the registered trademarks Grossinger's and Jennie Grossinger for all food products. The trademark is licensed to Denk Bakeries, Brooklyn, which produces Grossinger's bread products.

According to Schwartz, the company plans to license the Grossinger trademark for other food products to be sold in supermarkets throughout the East Coast and particularly in the metropolitan New York area.

All spots ran on the four cable networks owned by Turner Broadcasting System: Cable News Network, Headline News, TBS and TNT.

A final flight of IGA commercials for 1994 is scheduled for the pre-Thanksgiving period between Nov. 4 and 17. The TV commercials are built around the alliance's "Hometown Proud" campaign and feature vignettes of everyday life, centered on the particular holiday being spotlighted.

Production of the spots and the purchase of air time is paid for by participating manufacturers. Sponsors for the most recent flight included Coca-Cola USA, Coca-Cola Foods, Miller Brewing Co., Nabisco Biscuit Co. and Nabisco Foods Group.

IGA is a voluntary alliance of more than 2,800 licensed stores in the United States.
