Each store carries about 20 organic/biodynamic wines. About 15 additional varieties will be added over the next year. Biodynamic wines, similar to organic, are made by grapes that are grown in soil that has been revitalized through nonchemical means.

In other beverage news, the company announced in "Decantings" that it has built new coolers in the basement of its Oakwood store the better to meet the need for cold beer.

Miller: Beer Buyers Sip Soon

MILWAUKEE -- Most beer shoppers consume beer within hours of purchase, and decide to buy beer before entering the store, according to Miller Brewing Co.'s new "Beer Is Volume With Profit" report.

The report states that 81% of beer shoppers drink cold beer within hours of purchase, and 85% decide to buy before entering the store.

Supermarket beer shoppers are predominantly white, blue- collar males and 40% are between 28 and 44 years of age. Females account for 24% of sales, which is greater than that of convenience and package stores. Beer buyers overwhelmingly prefer domestic, premium low-calorie selections, followed by premium full-calorie. Although craft/specialty is small in volume, it experienced the largest percentage of growth last year.

A&P Dips Into Coffee Singles

MONTVALE, N.J. -- Compass Foods, a division of A&P here, has introduced Coffee Singles in regular and decaffeinated varieties. The bags are individually sealed for freshness and have a one-year shelf life. The suggested retail price for the regular 20-bag variety is $2.99, while the decaffeinated version sells for $3.49.
