Grand Union Co., Wayne, N.J., said last week it has completed the sale of substantially all its assets and business to GU Markets, an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers, Brattleboro, Vt., and other third-party purchasers. Included in the purchase are approximately 170 Grand Union stores, the company's distribution center in Montgomery, N.Y., and certain other non-operating locations. C&S said it will operate approximately 30 of the stores, sell 15 locations to non-food retailers and transfer 92 stores to five retailers -- Hannaford (five stores), Pathmark (six), Shaw's (19), Stop & Shop (42) and Tops (20). Grand Union will retain 16 locations and seek alternative buyers for them.
