TROY, Mich. -- Donald S. Perkins, 68, a former supermarket executive, has been named chairman of Kmart Corp. here.
Perkins assumes the position formerly held by Joseph E. Antonini, who continues as president and chief executive officer. Perkins does not become a company executive and will not maintain a corporate office.
Perkins was president of Jewel Cos. for five years and chairman and chief executive for 10 years.
Jewel was the parent company of Jewel Food Stores, Melrose Park, Ill., before that supermarket operation was purchased by American Stores Co., Salt Lake City. Perkins retired from Jewel in 1980. He has most recently been a member of numerous corporate boards of directors, including the Kmart board.
Kmart said it will also add two independent board members. The company reported that it has begun a strategic review of its business, addressing a wide range of issues.
