The eight stores include six units of Ralphs and two of Hughes Family Markets, which were both acquired last March by Fred Meyer Inc., Portland, Ore. Hughes was part of Quality Food Centers, Bellevue, Wash.

The eight stores acquired by Vons were the first of the 19 stores selected by the attorney general's office for divestment to other supermarket operators, a Ralphs spokesman told SN. He said the chain expects to sell the other 11, including 10 Ralphs and one Hughes, within the next couple of months.

The state originally said all 19 stores should be sold within nine months of the merger with Fred Meyer; however, the pending merger of American Stores Co., Salt Lake City, with Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's, took a couple of potential buyers out of the bidding and has delayed the process somewhat, the spokesman said.

He said Ralphs expects to take its products and fixtures out of the stores by late January. The 60 to 75 employees per store will be transferred to other Ralphs units, with no loss of jobs, he added.
