TORONTO (FNS) -- Restaurants in the U.S. are selling more food than grocery stores and Canadian grocers could face the same problem if they don't improve service, according to American retail consultant Harold Lloyd.
of food sales are generated by restaurants versus 40% in Canada.
Lloyd said supermarkets fail in several areas of customer service, including the lack of bathrooms in most stores. He said shoppers would probably spend more time in a supermarket if it had a bathroom. Customers also respond favorably if they are greeted by an employee, if there is a service desk and if there are shorter lines.
