PARIS -- Exposium, the organizer of the SIAL food show, is gearing up for two events this year targeting Asia and South America.

e second international food and beverage show for the Mercosur region, is set for Aug. 24 to 27 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Both Sial Asia and Sial Mercosur are endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Sial Asia will occupy 130,000 square feet in Halls 1 and 2 of Singapore Expo. Despite the difficulty of producing a first-time show in Singapore during the Asian economic slowdown, SIAL Asia organizers report that 300 exhibitors from 37 countries have confirmed their participation to date: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Cypress, Malta, Turkey, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, Syria, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada and the United States.

The official USA pavilion at SIAL Asia will cover 2,000 net square feet and includes a wide range of exhibitors.

SIAL Asia organizers estimate the show will gather some 7,000 trade-only visitors from the Asia Pacific and Middle East -- importers and buyers, food distributors, restaurateurs, caterers and others in the food business.

Two months later in Buenos Aires, the second edition of Sial Mercosur will open its doors at the new Costa Salguero Exhibition Center. The Mercosur region, formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay with Chile and Bolivia as associate members, is the world's No. 3 economic block after the European Union and the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In 1997 the first edition of Sial Mercosur attracted 503 exhibitors and 21,000 visitors on 220,000 square feet of exhibit area. Organizers anticipate a substantially larger participation for this year's show. At five months before show opening, exhibitor registrations in the second official USA pavilion at Sial Mercosur represent 39 booths on 4,900 square feet, up from 19 booths on 1,000 square feet in 1997.
