NEW YORK -- Several mass market health and beauty care brands were honored by Time Inc.'s Health magazine as being among the healthiest beauty products of 1999.

iest were: Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion with SPF 15 as the healthiest anti-aging treatment; Pantene Pro-V Daily Treatment Conditioner, healthiest conditioner and Almay Stay Smooth Anti-Chap Lip color, healthiest lip product. These brands, as well as the other winning brands that are sold through specialty and department stores, are featured in the November/December issue of Health magazine.

In searching for the healthiest beauty products, cosmetic companies were asked to nominate their products in the following ten categories: anti-aging treatment, facial moisturizer, cleanser, eye treatment, shampoo, conditioner, styling product, foundation, lip and nail product. Health received over 500 nominations.

A panel of three independent dermatologists tested and evaluated five finalists in each category. The dermatologists chose the winners based on clinical data and by carrying out independent performance reviews. Among the criteria the dermatologists used in selecting the winning products were: ingredients, packaging, performance, sun protection, anti-aging benefits, moisturizing ability and whether or not the product filled a healthy need in the market.

In conjunction with the beauty product awards, model-actress Lauren Hutton received the magazine's first Healthy Beauty Lifetime Achievement Award as a woman who has played an important role in helping American women develop a healthy attitude about their looks. Health editors say they will make this an annual event.
