RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- IGA celebrated the mosaic of its worldwide membership last week at its annual Global Summit here. Reflecting the meeting's theme, "Community -- Bringing the Family Together," IGA Chairman Thomas P. Haggai said IGA's 4,400 members blend the things they have in common and their differences "into a family that fits together like pieces of a mosaic, held together by the mortar of shared values about filling the eating needs of our customers." The three-day meeting included welcoming several new members into the IGA family, including three new wholesalers: Associated Grocers of Florida, Miami; Affiliated Foods Midwest, Norfolk, Neb.; and Associated Wholesale Grocers, Kansas City, Kan. New IGA retailers included Houchens Industries, Bowling Green, Ky., which agreed to add the IGA name to its supermarkets; H.Y. Louie Co., Burnaby, British Columbia, which returned to the core IGA group in the United States; and three companies from China. Speakers included retailers from the United Kingdom and Australia, and professors from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia (see Page 28).
