MADISON, Wis. — The International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association is ready to receive entries from store-level cake decorators for its 18th Annual Cake Decorating Challenge, a featured event at the association’s Dairy-Deli-Bake Seminar and Expo, June 2-4, in Orlando, Fla.
It’s easy to get into the competition, IDDBA officials said. Decorators need only send a scrapbook that shows off the best cakes they’ve ever decorated, and an entry form, which can be obtained from IDDBA’s website.
The more top quality photos submitted, the easier it will be for judges to decide on the three finalists who will get an all-expenses-paid trip to Orlando to compete in the three-day challenge on the show floor, officials said.
There, the finalists will create cakes that will showcase their specific abilities and talents. Judges will be looking for expertise in production cakes, theme cakes and wedding cakes.
“The definition of challenge is ‘a call to engage in a contest, fight or competition,’ and IDDBA’s 18th Annual Cake Decorating Challenge is all three,” IDDBA executive director Carol Christison told SN.
“It’s a contest of skill, a fight to the finish, and a competition that demonstrates endurance, creativity and work under pressure. Most cake-decorating contests are for one cake or they last just for a few hours. This one is held over three days and tests the contestants’ stamina, planning and execution,” as well as their decorating skills, Christison added.
Last year, the three finalists, from three different supermarket chains, were chosen from 70 entries. The deadline for entering the first phase (the scrapbook judging) of the 2013 Challenge is February 14, 2013.
