Colorado Workers, Chains Look to Extend Contract

Union workers at Safeway and King Soopers stores here have requested further extensions to their existing contracts as negotiation deadlines with the respective retailers failed to provide a new deal.

DENVER — Union workers at Safeway and King Soopers stores here have requested further extensions to their existing contracts as negotiation deadlines with the respective retailers failed to provide a new deal.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 said it reached an agreement with Safeway on Wednesday to extend their deal through June 15. Published reports Thursday said the union made a similar extension request of Kroger Co., which operates King Soopers.

Employees of both chains have been working on an extension of a deal that was to have expired May 9. The union, which is also negotiating separately with Albertsons, said wages and pension remain an issue between workers and management.
