FDA Investigates Arizona Lettuce Farm for E. Coli

WASHINGTON — U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials are investigating a lettuce farm in Yuma, Arizona as a possible source of E. coli-contaminated romaine lettuce that has led to 19 confirmed illnesses and 12 hospitalizations in New York, Ohio and Michigan.

Sidney, Ohio-based Freshway Foods on Thursday issued a recall of shredded romaine lettuce products that have “best if used by” dates of May 12 or earlier, due to possible E. coli contamination, and has advised consumers not to eat grab-and-go salads at Kroger Co. [2], Giant Eagle [3], Ingles Markets [4] and Marsh [5] stores.

An executive from Freshway Foods told the Associated Press on Friday afternoon that his company had worked with the FDA to trace the lettuce back to a farm in Yuma.
