EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here said Thursday it has donated more than $1.3 million through its Shop for Schools program — nearly double the amount it donated last year.

Shop for Schools, which was launched in the spring of 2009, allows schools within a three-mile radius of a Fresh & Easy store to receive a $1 donation for every $20 spent between mid-September and Dec. 31.

In addition to collecting receipts, registered schools are also able to participate in Shopping Nights, during which 5% of the store's total sales between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. are donated to the participating schools. Fresh & Easy said nearly 2,000 schools participated in the 2010 program.
