ABINGDON, Va. — K-VA-T Food Stores [2] on Tuesday sponsored a free symposium featuring David Katz, the visionary behind the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System in use at K-VA-T and many other supermarkets.

Held at the Knoxville (Tenn.) Convention Center, the symposium addressed ways to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Katz is adjunct associate professor of Public Health Practice at the Yale University School of Medicine, and directs the Yale Prevention Research Center.

“He’ll give you practical ways to eat well and make wiser food choices,” according to K-VA-T promotional materials.

Another speaker was Bret Rogers, a cardiologist at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, who talked about nutrition’s role in maintaining heart health. Staff from the medical center’s “Healthy Living Kitchen” handed out literature to all attendees.

K-VA-T launched NuVal in its Food City-banner stores last fall.
