Target Announces Sustainable Seafood Goals

MINEAOPOLIS — Target [2] joined a growing number of retailers who are making public commitments to sustainably sourced seafood through its partnership with the nonprofit FishWise.

Like Safeway [3], which is also partnering with FishWise, Target has announced a 2015 goal to entirely transition its fresh and frozen offerings to sustainable and traceable varieties.

In a release, Target defined sustainable and traceable seafood as seafood that’s “caught or raised in an environmentally sensitive manner and maintain Target’s business needs without jeopardizing the affected ecosystems.”

In order to meet its traceability goals, Target plans to work with non profit groups, certification bodies and government organizations, according to a release. Target’s also plans to transition its private labels, educate shoppers, source from third-party certified fisheries and encourage fisheries to get involved in projects “that result in credible certification and verifiable change.”

“When Target eliminated farmed salmon in favor of wild-caught salmon last year, we took the first step in a long-term commitment to improving the sustainability of our seafood assortment,” said Shawn Gensch, vice president, Marketing, who oversees the company’s sustainability programs.

“As we continue toward 100 percent sustainable seafood, guests can shop with confidence knowing that Target’s seafood products are both healthy for their family and environmentally responsible.”
