ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets [2] is leveraging QR code technology in the latest edition of Wegmans Menu magazine.

The two-dimensional code can be found in a “Get Growing” section that highlights a simple approach to gardening using a container rather than digging in the ground. Smartphone users who scan the code are directed to a how-to video on building your own raised garden bed on wegmans.com.

All the supplies will be available at Wegmans as they’re needed. For instance, shoppers can purchase organic seeds, starter pots, potting soil and fertilizer with gardening books in January, and garden tools, compost, containers and frames for raised beds in time for local planting outdoors, after the last frost.

“It might seem surprising that a grocery store that sells vegetables would encourage customers to grow their own, but it was a natural fit for us,” said Wendy Altamura, category merchant for general merchandise at Wegmans. “We’re about making it easier to put healthy meals on the table and about supporting healthy lifestyles for families, and gardening speaks to both values.”
